Geometry for the MCAS: What to Focus On
Alongside Algebra I, Geometry standards make up much of the grade-10 MCAS Mathematics test. Geometry blends visual reasoning with algebra — which is exactly why students strong in one but not the other get tripped up.
The framework domains to know
Diagrams are half the test
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a figure is drawn to scale when it isn't stated to be.
- Mixing up the trig ratios — keep SOH-CAH-TOA in front of you until it's automatic.
- Forgetting units, especially squaring or cubing them for area and volume.
- Geometry rewards visual reasoning plus algebra.
- Annotate every diagram before solving.
- Lock in right-triangle trig and coordinate methods.
- Watch units and don't assume figures are to scale.
MCAS Practice™ is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Our practice questions are independently authored and are multiple-choice only — the official MCAS also includes open-response and essay questions, so our material is not identical to, and not a substitute for, the real exam. Test format, timing, and score thresholds can change; always confirm current details with DESE or your school.
