Geometry for the MCAS: What to Focus On

Alongside Algebra I, Geometry standards make up much of the grade-10 MCAS Mathematics test. Geometry blends visual reasoning with algebra — which is exactly why students strong in one but not the other get tripped up.

The framework domains to know

Congruence & transformations
Rigid motions (translations, rotations, reflections) and using them to justify congruence.
Similarity & right-triangle trig
Similar figures, the Pythagorean theorem, and sine/cosine/tangent.
Circles
Central and inscribed angles, arcs, chords, and tangent relationships.
Coordinate geometry
Distance, midpoint, slope; equations of lines and circles.
Measurement & modeling
Area, surface area, volume, and real-world applications.

Diagrams are half the test

Strategy
Build the habit of marking up every figure: label equal sides and angles, add right-angle marks, and write known values directly on the diagram. A large share of “hard” Geometry questions become routine once the figure is fully annotated.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a figure is drawn to scale when it isn't stated to be.
  • Mixing up the trig ratios — keep SOH-CAH-TOA in front of you until it's automatic.
  • Forgetting units, especially squaring or cubing them for area and volume.
Important on exam day
Answer every question — there's no penalty for guessing on the MCAS. Use the provided reference sheet, sketch on scratch paper, and re-read what each diagram actually states before you solve.
Key takeaways
  • Geometry rewards visual reasoning plus algebra.
  • Annotate every diagram before solving.
  • Lock in right-triangle trig and coordinate methods.
  • Watch units and don't assume figures are to scale.

MCAS Practice™ is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Our practice questions are independently authored and are multiple-choice only — the official MCAS also includes open-response and essay questions, so our material is not identical to, and not a substitute for, the real exam. Test format, timing, and score thresholds can change; always confirm current details with DESE or your school.
