Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the MCAS Exam

What is a MCAS Exam?

The MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) is the statewide standardized testing program run by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). High-school students take MCAS tests in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and a Science & Technology/Engineering subject. MCAS reports four performance levels — Not Meeting, Partially Meeting, Meeting, and Exceeding Expectations — rather than a single pass/fail score, with Meeting Expectations or higher as the proficiency target.

Are the practice questions aligned with the actual MCAS?

Every question on MCAS Practice™ is independently authored and mapped to a specific Massachusetts Learning Standard, modeled after the multiple-choice format, length, and difficulty range of the official MCAS. Important: this is multiple-choice practice only — the real MCAS also includes open-response and short-answer questions (and an ELA essay) that we do not cover or grade. Our material is independent practice; it is not identical to, and not a substitute for, the official exam. We are not affiliated with Massachusetts DESE and do not publish their actual exam content.

Are there essay or written-response questions?

No. MCAS Practice is multiple-choice practice only. The real MCAS also includes open-response and short-answer questions (and a writing/essay component in ELA), which we do not cover, simulate, or grade. Every question we provide is auto-graded instantly with an AI explanation, so you always know why an answer is right or wrong — but plan to prepare separately for the open-response and essay portions of the official exam.

Which subjects can I prepare for?

Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Biology, and Chemistry — each with hundreds of Massachusetts-aligned practice questions and AI-powered explanations.

How much does MCAS Practice™ prep cost?

The free plan gives you sample questions for every subject. Unlimited practice, mock exams, AI explanations, and Massachusetts mastery tracking are $19.99 per subject (regularly $29.99) for 6 months — far less than tutoring.

How is the MCAS scored?

MCAS doesn't use a single pass/fail percentage — it reports four performance levels: Not Meeting, Partially Meeting, Meeting, and Exceeding Expectations. Meeting Expectations or higher is the proficiency target. Our practice shows your performance on full-length mocks so you can track your progress toward Meeting Expectations and above.

How is this different from a study guide PDF?

You get Massachusetts-tagged practice questions, instant AI explanations for every wrong answer, weak-point retargeting, full-length mock exams, and progress tracking — none of which a static PDF can offer.
